MAREDES reaches out to Dam Spillage Victims in Mepe

The Marshallan Relief and Development Services (MAREDES), the charity wing of the Knights and Ladies of Marshall, on Friday 20th October 2023, donated relief items to the communities affected by the spillage of the Akosombo and Kpong dams, at Mepe in the Tema Region.

The donation was done in collaboration with the Tema Region, led by the Regional Grand Knight, Worthy Bro Lawrence Atumbini and the Regional Noble Lady, Respected Lady Sis Doris Ocloo.
Items such as food items made up of bags of rice, cooking oil and beverage, drinking water, clothing, beddings and hygiene materials were donated at the event.

The Board Chairman of MAREDES, Worthy Bro Dr Andre Kwasi-Kumah presented the items to the Parochial Vicar of St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church, Battor, Rev. Fr. Emmanuel Akordor, SVD, for distribution to the people of Mepe, which is an out-station of the Parish.

Worthy Bro Dr Kwasi-Kumah gave the assurance that beyond the donation, MAREDES would organize counselling sessions for the victims to address their emotional trauma.

It is estimated that about 26,000 people upstream and downstream of the Akoombo and Kpong hydro electric dams have been left homeless by the aftermath of the spillage of water from the two dams.

Receiving the items on behalf of the victims, Rev. Fr. Emmanuel Akordor SVD, the Parochial of St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church Battor under which Mepe is an outstation, thanked the MAREDES team for the timely intervention and asked other organizations to follow swiftly
He expressed his appreciation to the Noble Order of the Knights and Ladies of Marshall for always going to the aid of people in need.
He gave the assurance that the items would be fairly distributed to all affected persons.
