THE Metropolitan Archbishop of Kumasi, Most Rev. Gabriel Justice Yaw Anokye, has charged Christians to speak against the ills in the society.
He said Christians could not continue to remain silent in the face of all the challenges facing society for fear of being tagged.
Most Rev. Anokye, who delivered a homily at this year’s Marshallan Day celebration at the All Saints Parish at Fankyenebra near Kumasi, urged Christians, particularly Marshallans, not to remain docile in the face of those challenges but to be bold and speak up.
KNIGHTS AND LADIES OF MARSHALL
The Mass was attended by members of the Knights and Ladies of Marshall from the Ashanti South Denkyira Regional Court and Council.
The Knights and Ladies of Marshall is a Catholic friendly society formed some 90 years ago to immortalise the name of Sir James Marshall, a British judge in the then Gold Coast, through whose instrumentality the Catholic Church was revived in Ghana after 250 years of inactivity.
Politics
Most Rev. Anokye pointed out that politics was not the preserve of any particular group of people.
He observed that for fear of being tagged as a member of a political party, people have been cowed into silence.
That, he said, should not be allowed to continue if Ghanaians wanted things to change.
While admitting that prayers could solve some of the problems facing the country, he said unless people took action, the solutions might take a while.
Current challenges
Most Rev. Anokye cited the power crisis, corruption and graduate unemployment as some of the serious challenges facing the country.
He said the power crisis was affecting everyone, including the churches, as some of them had had to close down their businesses.
For instance, he said the Catholic Church in Kumasi was involved in the production of sachet water and now spends more on fuel to power the plant, thus making the business run at a loss.
He said if that continued, the ideal thing to do would be to fold up.
Most Rev. Anokye thus charged his flock not to be afraid of any tagging but to speak up and seek for a change of the current situation.
