Sir Kt. Bro. Prof. Dr. Dr. Sir George Wireko Brobby – AN ACTION ORIENTED PERSONALITY

 

PSK Sir Kt. Bro. Prof. Dr. Dr. Sir George Wireko Brobby, the 26th Supreme Knight of the Knights of

Marshall, is a doer who gives his best in all his undertakings. It is evident from his life’s trajectory that

he was destined for greatness. Diligence, consistency, dedication and his reverence of God are the

underlying tenets of his philosophy which he attributes to his success. He believes that all who aspire to

reach the commanding heights of their lives should embody these characteristics.

 

Born at Dunkwa-On-Offin in 1942, Sir Kt. Prof.Dr. Dr. Brobby inspired by his parents served among

a few of his peers as a mass server at the St. Stevens Catholic Church and continued at St. Augustine

College in Cape – Coast in 1957.

 

As an active member of the Catholic Students Association of the University of Marburg, Germany, he

did not relax on his return to Ghana. From 1986 to 1990, he was twice elected President of the , Non

Aligned Group of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Parish Chaplaincy of the Kwame Nkrumah University of

Science and Technology, (KNUST), Kumasi.

 

THE NOBLE ORDER AND THE CHURCH

His involvement in Church activities in Kumasi especially at the KNUST chaplaincy has been legendary

culminating in his membership of the Parish Council for many years and serving in other committees of

the Church.

 

Sir Kt. Bro. Prof. Dr. Dr. Brobby’s journey into the Noble Order started in 1990 when he was initiated in

Council 13, Dunkwa. He rose to the enviable position of a Secretary, in 1992 and Grand Knight in 1996.

At the regional level, he became Secretary of the Regional Council in 1998 serving for a period of three

He was subsequently elevated to the Supreme Council where he served as Deputy Supreme Physician on

two consecutive terms.

 

From then on there was no turning back. He moved to the position as Supreme Physician and Deputy

Supreme Knight 2003 -2005 after a very keenly contested election. He was installed the 26th Supreme

Knight for the period 2005-2007.

 

As Supreme Knight he served as the first President of the Knighthood Forum, hosted the first Council

meeting UNUM OMNES in Ghana and re-engineered the revival of pilgrimage of Marshallans to Israel

and some holiest sites in Christendom. He is also a foundation member of the Cardinal Turkson

 

Foundation For Health and Education

One area Marshallans would continue to remember is his introduction of new ceremonial uniforms

for officers of the Noble Order and his gallant effort which led to the completion and furnishing of the

Marshallan Centre .

 

He was knighted by his Holiness Pope John Paul II with the Knighthood of St. Gregory the Great in 2000

and was honored with the ORDER OF THE VOLTA- Companion Division by the President of the Republic

of Ghana at the National Award Celebrations of 2007.

 

EDUCATIONAL AND MEDICAL SERVICE BACKGROUND

Sir Kt. Bro. Prof . Dr. Dr. Brobby’s educational career is impressive.After completing his secondary

education at St. Augustine College he enrolled at the University of Marburg in West Germany from 1964

to 1973, where he was granted a special permission to study Medicine and Dentistry simultaneously on

Ghana Government Scholarship. He graduated with MB ChB in June 1971 and BDS in 1972 and followed

this up with a double doctorial dissertation in 1972 and 1973 awarded with Magna cum laude in both

Medcine and Dentistry. He obtained his Fellowship in Ear Nose and Throat, Head and Neck Surgery in

1977 at the University of Dusseldorf, West Germany and was elected Fellow of the West African College

of Surgeons in 1985.

 

LEADERSHIP POSITION IN THE MEDICAL SECTOR

Sir Kt. Bro. Prof. Dr. Dr. Brobby has occupied many leadership positions. He became a foundation Fellow

of the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons and was elected Vice Rector for three consecutive

terms by his peers, culminating in his position as current president of the Post Graduate College. He

served as President of the Ghana Medical Association from 1995 to 1997 and the Ghana Surgical

Research Society from 1996 to 1998. He is a teacher at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels

and internal assessor at the West African College of Surgeons and the Ghana College of Surgeons in

his field of Ear Nose and Throat Surgery .Prof. Brobby was appointed WHO – Consultant on Prevention

of Deafness and Hearing Impairment in 1996. Sir George is Associate Editor in the journal of Hearing

International, Japan and a member of the British Medical Journal, African Edition and a member of the

Advisory Board of KNUST Journal .He is also an Associate Editor of the West African College of Surgeons

His international experience includes his appointment as the President Initiative for Deaf Education

in Commonwealth countries from 1994-1998; Secretary General of the Pan African Federation of

Otorhinolaryngological Societies(PAFOS) Culminating in his election as President of PAFOS from 1999-

Professor Sir George has published extensively in journals and written a number of chapters in

textbooks. He is the editor of a reference Book on Meningitis, March 2012 (ISBN) 978-953-51-0383-7.He

was honored with the prestigious Fellowship of the New York Academy of Sciences in 1992.

As the longest serving Dean (1992 – 2002) of the School of Medical Sciences, and in recognition of his

incisive role for the training of postgraduate doctors at SMS, the KNUST University Council honored

him with a Doctor of Science Degree (honoris causa) in February 2010. For his contribution to medical

education and the care of the deaf, Prof. Sir George was awarded another honorary doctorate from the

Open International University in Sri Lanka.

 

Among his greatest achievements are the establishment of the Kumasi Hearing Assessment Centre at

KATH through the magnificent generosity of the Commonwealth Society for the Deaf, which is the only

centre recognized by WHO as a collaborative centre in the whole of the sub-region and the Kumasi

Collaborative Centre for Research (KCCR) into Tropical Medicine which is affiliated with the Bernhard

Nocht Institute for Tropical Medicine in Hamburg, Germany. This joint venture between the Kwame

Nkrumah University of Science and Technology Kumasi, Ghana and the Ministry of Health, Ghana and

the Bernhard Nocht, Institute for Tropical Medicine, Hamburg, Germany was founded in 1997.

He has recently been appointed as the Chairman of the Advisory Board of this centre of excellence in

Tropical Medicine for the period 2012 -2015.

 

APPRECIATION OF RITUALS

Sir Kt. Bro. Prof. Dr. Dr. Brobby’s acknowledgement and appreciation of the rituals of the Noble Order

are deep judging from his numerous thought – provoking presentations, punctuated with scholarly Latin

verses and translations.

 

Speaking to marshallan.org, he encouraged all Marshallans to continue to live by the tenets of the Noble

Order and help in the promotion and defence of the Catholic faith at all times. Additionally he wants all

councils and courts to draw up effective strategies to strengthen all junior councils and courts.
