MAREDES SUPPORT FOR GIRLS MATHEMATICS EDUCAION 2014 LAUNCHED

The 2014 (Second) Marshallan Relief and Development Services (MAREDES)/ECOBANK Support for Girls Mathematics Education was launched at the Centenary House of the National Catholic Secretariat in Accra on Wednesday, October 29, 2014. The project entails the distribution of mathematical sets to girls in deprived schools across the country.

RL Sis. Elizabeth Anderson-Yebuah, Vice Chairperson of MAREDES, welcoming media personnel and other dignitaries to the launch, pointed out that in April, 2013 MAREDES took the bold step to provide motivational and practical support to girls in deprived communities to develop their interest in Mathematics Education. ECOBANK generously supported MAREDES with GH¢7,000 which was used to buy mathematical sets that were distributed to 2,000 girls across the country. The success of the first project motivated the organization to plan for a second phase which involved the distribution of mathematical sets to 3,000 girls across the country. Once again ECOBANK has agreed to support MAREDES, this time with GH¢20,000.00.

Sir Kt. Bro. Eddie Prah, Chairman of MAREDES, in a statement on behalf of the Board, thanked ECOBANK for supporting MAREDES with GH¢20,000.00. He pointed out that the partnership demonstrates a more effective and impactful form of corporate social responsibility. He was hopeful that ECOBANK by its support was not only addressing a real social need of today but also planting itself indelibly in the hearts of the future generation. He prayed that ECOBANK would maintain its support to MAREDES so that it could attain its target of one million female JHS students in deprived areas of the country.

Among schools earmarked to benefit from the mathematical sets are Apewosika JHS, Al Sunna JHS at Axim, St. Augustine JHS at Axim, Anglican JHS at Axim and Brawire/Akyinim JHS all in the Western Region; Gbi-Wegbe EP JHS, Gbi Kpoeta School both in Hohoe Municipality of the Volta Region; Yawsae MA JHS, Asuakwaa DA JHS, Bofokrom SDA JHS, Nanketewa RC JHS all in the Brong Ahafo Region; Our Lady of Fatima JHS at Kpong in the Eastern Region; Accra New Town Experimental 1and 2 JHS in Accra Metro of the Greater Accra Region and Achiaa Tawia MA JHs in Amoaman, Kwabena Kwao MA JHS in Obuasi all in the Ashanti Region.

Mr. Ernest Hayford, Head of Financial Reporting of ECOBANK-Ghana, in a short remark before handing over the dummy cheque for GH¢20,0000 to MARADES said last year the Pan-African Bank partnered MAREDES to distribute mathematical sets to about 2,000 girls. The reason for giving support for the project was because Mathematics is a very interesting subject and should be encouraged in schools. It involves critical thinking which broadens the minds of individuals, thereby giving them various solutions to problems. It is a subject which should be taught extensively because of the impact it has on individuals. Mr. Hayford pointed out that ECOBANK was happy with the outcome of the first project hence the support for the second project. He was hopeful that there would be improvement in the grades of recipients by this time next year.

The dummy cheque was received on behalf of MAREDES by Sir Kt. Bro. Joseph Ekow Painstil,  Supreme Knight of the Knights of Marshall, and MRL Sis. Margaret Yerenkyi,  Grand Lady of the Ladies of Marshall. They promised to ensure that the funds were used for the purpose for which it was earmarked. They called on other financial institutions and donors to support MAREDES to expand the project to cover the provision of books and scholarships to girls in deprived schools across the country.
