MAREDES organizes workshop for teachers

The Marshallan Relief and Development Services (MAREDES), a non-governmental organisation of the Noble Order of the Knights and Ladies of Marshall, a Catholic-friendly society, has organised a two-day training in Science and Mathematics teaching methodology for selected junior high school teachers in the country.

The workshop, which was held at the Holy Child College of Education, Sekondi, was to build the capacity of Mathematics and Science teachers on improved methodology of teaching at the basic level.

Among the topics treated at the training workshop were Methods of Teaching Science, Scheme of Work and Lessons in Science, Methods of Teaching Mathematics, Scheme of Work and Lessons in Mathematics.

Low performance

In a brief remark at the opening ceremony, the Board Chairman of MAREDES, Sir Knight Edward Aloysius Prah, explained that the training formed part of a long-term objective of MAREDES to improve on educational output through enhanced delivery with the goal of leveraging opportunities for girls’ in  mathematics education.

He said the consistent downgrading of Ghana in global performance ranking in Mathematics and Science underscored the relevance for the training workshop.

Sir Kt Prah said MAREDES, with financial support from Ecobank Ghana, had supported girls’ mathematics education in deprived communities across the country through the distribution of mathematical sets in the last three years.

He said it was as a contribution to the second phase of the project that the Marshallan Endowment Fund sponsored a training workshop in Mathematics and Science teaching methodology, targeting teachers mostly from schools that had received supplies of the mathematical sets.
