GOD’S WORD FOR THE DAY – 9TH SEPTEMBER 2016

GOD’S WORD FOR THE DAY (based on Catholic Liturgical Readings)

DATE: 9TH SEPTEMBER 2016

FRIDAY OF THE 23RD WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME

(MEMORIAL OF SAINT PETER CLAVER)

1ST READING: 1Corinthians 9:16-19, 22-27

PSALM: Psalm 84:3-6, 12

GOSPEL: Luke 6:39-42

THEME: FOR LACK OF VISION MY PEOPLE PERISH

A spiritually blind person is not one without good sight but one without good vision. Sight is the function of the eyes but vision is borne out of a relationship with the divine.

To associate oneself with a visionless person or worse still to follow such a person is to risk destroying oneself. “Can a blind person guide a blind person? Will not both fall into a pit?” (Lk. 6:39)

A person with a vision has an inner certitude of what he/she is about and where he/she is going. Paul stands out as an example. His mission as a preacher of the Gospel was propelled by the vision that he was a steward, entrusted with a task. He writes in our First Reading, “I run in such a way, as not without aim; I box in such a way, as not beating the air; but I buffet my body and bring it into subjection, lest possibly, after I have preached to others, I myself should be disqualified” (1Cor 9:26-27).

There are many people walking about with two eyes on their faces but without any vision. Since they do not know where they are going, they settle for anything. Visionless persons easily give up in life because there is nothing to look up to.

On the wings of prayer, the eyes of our heart can open and then we can catch the vision that God is showing to us.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, open the eyes of my heart. Let me see what you see and lead me on the path of salvation.
